Before your first kebaya fitting
A practical wedding-fashion checklist, without the sales pressure.
Kebaya belongs to a shared Southeast Asian clothing tradition recognized by UNESCO. For your own occasion, start with the celebration, your comfort preferences, and the style you want to express.
Bring your intended shoes and underlayers to a fitting if the atelier recommends it. Try sitting, walking, lifting your arms, and using stairs. Ask about lining, fastening, embroidery, skirt movement, and how alterations affect the final look.
Request a written breakdown of the garment, alterations, accessories, and delivery arrangement. Agree the fitting schedule and what happens if the date changes. A photograph is useful inspiration, but the finished garment should work for your body and your day.
Bring the occasion into your fitting
Prepare the date, type of occasion, venue, duration, and activities you expect to do. Sitting through a ceremony, standing on a stage, and walking outdoors can call for different decisions. Bring visual references as a starting point for discussion rather than a request to copy another maker’s work. Explain what you like about the silhouette, color, collar, or texture so the designer can respond to your needs and comfort.
Test movement with the right accessories
Where possible, wear the underlayers and shoes you plan to use on the day. Check whether the skirt length remains manageable while walking and whether the sleeves allow you to hug someone or lift your arms. Ask how to put on and remove the garment, including the fastening arrangement. Try headwear and a bag together with the outfit so you can assess both the overall balance and freedom of movement.
Agree on the scope of the order
Request a written outline covering materials, lining, embroidery, accessories, the number of fittings, and alterations included in the fee. Separate the garment price from rental charges, delivery, or additional adjustments. Agree on measurement, follow-up fitting, and collection dates. For a rental, understand return conditions and damage terms. These questions support a clear conversation without assuming that every atelier offers the same services or policies.
Prepare for the day of wear
Keep the atelier’s contact details and dressing instructions somewhere easy to access. Inspect the garment before taking it home and ask about suitable transport and storage. Allow enough time to dress without rushing. If you need help getting ready, make sure the helper understands the order of the layers and fastenings. A kebaya is more than a photograph: moving, sitting, and greeting guests are also part of a successful choice.
Keep fitting notes that lead to action
At each fitting, describe an issue with a specific movement. Instead of saying only that the garment feels uncomfortable, show when a shoulder pulls or a layer needs adjustment. Ask the atelier to record the agreed changes and when you can try the result again. If several people offer opinions, make sure the final decision still reflects the wearer’s needs. Photographs can help you remember a detail but should not replace a physical check. Compare the result with your original fitting notes rather than a reference image taken with different lighting or posture. Leave time to test adjustments before collection.
Separate essentials from optional additions
List the essentials that allow you to wear the garment comfortably, then separate them from decorative additions. These might include manageable fastenings, a suitable length, appropriate underlayers, and room to move. Discuss optional accessories after those essentials are clear. If the event plan changes, ask how that affects fittings, collection, and the agreement already made. Keep a written summary of significant changes and the contact responsible for following up. This guide helps you prepare questions; it does not establish a particular atelier’s services, prices, delivery promises, or final results. Those details need a direct agreement with your chosen provider.
